Adaptive Clothing for Dementia: A Unique Design For Dementia Patients With Fidgeting Hands

Twiddle AdaptiWrap Open-Back Adaptive Clothing For Mid To Late-Stage Dementia

I came across the Twiddle AdaptiWrap open-back top while writing a detailed post on dementia clothing. This adaptive garment caught my eye because it had something I hadn’t seen on any other adaptive clothing. It had a fidget object inside the kangaroo pocket.

At the time, I had just finished a post about sensory therapy, fidget toys and dementia. In case you don’t know, fidget toys can provide tactile and visual stimulation for people with dementia that can help distract them from their anxiety and restlessness. The fidgets can redirect the individual’s attention away from agitation, promoting a sense of calmness in the person.

Anyways, I thought the fidget combined with a functional adaptive garment for someone with dementia was an innovative idea, so I wanted to create a separate post for this item of adaptive clothing.

The Twiddle AdaptiWrap For Alzheimer’s & Dementia Patients

The AdaptiWrap is a unisex polar fleece top with long sleeves designed for people with mid to late-stage dementia. Often people in the later stages of dementia require assistance with dressing. This shirt provides a convenient solution for individuals with dementia who require assisted dressing and for their caregivers.

How does the garment make dressing easier?

The answer is its open-back design, which eliminates the need to put on the garment over the wearer’s head.

Twiddle AdaptiWrap Open-Back Dressing

The AdaptiWrap is put on the wearer from the front, which allows the person’s arms to slide into the garment sleeves, so the individual doesn’t need to raise or lower their arms or struggle with small neck openings.

Once the adaptive top is on the person, the caregiver can pull the open back closed, creating a double panel that provides full backside coverage to the wearer. This full coverage helps to maintain the dignity of the person with dementia while wearing the AdaptiWrap.

Twiddle AdaptiWrap Shoulder Snap Closure

After pulling the double panel into place, snap buttons on the shoulder secure the garment into place. The shoulder closure mechanism can prevent inopportune disrobing, which can be an issue with some dementia patients. This prevention of inappropriate dressing not only provides dignity for the person with dementia, but it can also help ease the mind of their caregivers.

As mentioned earlier, this unisex adaptive garment is for both men and women.
